Offering a public, open access higher education, the 100-acre campus sits 5 miles from the heart of Bellevue, Washington, and 10 from downtown Seattle. Medical Teams International partners with Bellevue college to offer monthly free urgent dental care clinics to students, who often can be overlooked as a potentially vulnerable population lacking access to affordable dental care. The Promotores are volunteers that seek to build healthier communities through parish-based health promotion and leadership training in the Latino community. The program uses the techniques of popular education to build on the life experiences of lay leaders and support them in reaching their goals for a healthier community. Based on similar models from Latin America, the parish health promoter program seeks to create relationships between the Latino community, local churches and health care providers. Trained volunteers disseminate information on health and health services, and serve as liaisons between the community and the health delivery system. Parish health promoters build on the strengths of the parish community to establish trust and confidence that allows individuals to receive the care and services they need. "The Canby Center is a growing, faith-based, service oriented 501c3 nonprofit with a unique model which seeks to engage clients in their own growth as they are surrounded by a loving community. Our programs are growing through expanding partnerships with local churches, service clubs, donors, and The Canby School District. The focus of our vision is to provide poverty-alleviating, dignity-strengthening programs for youth and families. In the coming five years, we will inspire learning and life-change in ways we never have before with powerful mentoring programs and energizing life skills education. When we fulfill this vision, our clients will be on a path to living sustainable, community-minded, and God honoring lives. The community of Canby will be healthier physically, relationally, and spiritually. The Canby Center itself will be operating at optimal capacity in facilities which support our programs well.
