Medical Teams International
Stand Down is a grassroots, community-based program created in 1988 by Vietnam veterans to support homeless veterans by providing essential services such as food, clothing, medical care, legal aid, and job counseling. Inspired by the military practice of withdrawing troops from combat to rest and recover, Stand Downs aim to help veterans regain stability, dignity, and hope. Organized by volunteers, veteran organizations, and local communities, these multi-day events take place across the U.S. in parks, fields, and other open spaces, offering a safe, supportive environment to help veterans transition off the streets and into healthier, more stable lives. MTI - US Programs seeks to strengthen the existing US healthcare system by filling crucial gaps in accessing medical care. Volunteers provide urgent dental care in tandem with medical screenings for diabetes, depression, and hypertension. Offer referrals to continuing care for any patient in need. We ask all of our volunteers to come to their roles with compassion, understanding, and respect for the people we serve. Our volunteers aren’t just the heart and soul of our clinics — they’re the backbone of our work! Bringing free dental care and health screenings to underserved communities only happens because of compassionate professionals like you.
